Over the years I have directed a wide range of musical groups, naturally being a teacher a lot of this has been with children.
I have conducted orchestras, wind bands, big bands and choirs; large and small groups; beginners to experienced musicians.
When working with children and less experienced musicians there has to be an element of teaching involved in rehearsals. I like to think that I can do this quickly and efficiently so it still feels like a rehearsal, not a lesson.
A rehearsal should be like individual practice. There should be clear points that need improving whether that be improving a sense of ‘ensemble’ for a section, working on ‘interpretation’ or simply getting notes right!
I’ve been Musical Director for a number of shows in a variety of styles, from ’Grease’ to ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Bugsy Malone’ to ‘The Threepenny Opera’ and many more.
