Piano Teacher

An experienced teacher...

I’ve been teaching for 30 years with most of my attention going to school music. I have worked  in both state and independent schools, mainly in Hampshire and West Berkshire. For most of those years I was Head of Music, responsible for both the academic and instrumental teaching of pupils aged 11-18.
I have also taught privately in parallel with my school teaching; mostly giving piano lessons but also a mix of theory, music tech and even the occasional violin lesson!

A bit about me

I grew up in Norfolk studying the piano privately and the violin under the Norfolk Music Service. At 18 I went to Bristol University, initially as a composer under Raymond Warren and Adrian Beaumont. My piano lessons at Bristol were with Kenneth Mobbs and his amazing keyboard collection (at the time he had the largest private keyboard collection in the UK). His house was packed with many of his historic keyboards and lessons would regularly involve moving from room to room to use the ‘perfect’ instrument for a particular piece. This privileged access led me to specialise in early music. I graduated from Bristol with my final recital being music of the French Baroque performed on the harpsichord.

After completing my PGCE at Sussex University in 1992 I began a career as a music teacher. I have worked in both state and independent schools, mainly in Hampshire and West Berkshire. For most of those 27 years I was ‘Head of Music’, responsible for both the academic and instrumental teaching for 11 to 18 year olds. I have taught both ‘Music’ and ‘Music Technology’ up to A level standard.

In 2020 I moved back to Norfolk and enjoy playing violin with the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra.
